Restaurant review: Nawab (Indian)

The Nawab at the Solitaire Hotel does its best to look opulent, but unfortunately merely manages to appear stuffy and old-fashioned in its decor.

Decor
There are wooden trellises, hard-backed chairs, artificial lighting even in the day and an odd assortment of Mughal art.

Food
Most of the starters are served on cast iron sizzler platters which help to keep the food hot. Vegetarians must try the kalat ke aloo and the unusual rajma aur kele ki shikampuri kababs. A great find here is the palak singhada paneer which you won't find anywhere else and the crunch of the water chestnuts makes it special. For the meat eaters, murgh hazarvi kebabs, parcha gosht, dora zaffrani seekh, nimbu murgh and landhi kotal chapli kebabs may sound far fetched but are actually made surprisingly well. Baluchi murgh, kareli ghosh and matka murgh are also sure to please. Apart from the usual range of breads do try their fluffy Uzbeki naan. The dum murgh biryani is quite good but if you are feeling a little adventurous, order the delicious and fragrant aloo vadi biryani instead. The Nawab strives to produce dishes that should find place across our western border as is evident from the names connected with landhi kotal, Baluchistan and Uzbekistan. A thumb rule to good food is to eat local. Taking that into account it is a pleasant surprise that the Nawab manages to stick by standards that are hard to find elsewhere, especially in south India.

Service
Service is polite and courteous but the unusual menu makes it a challenge for the staff to describe the dishes.

Plus and minus
Go here for some of the rare dishes and try and get a table along the glass walled right side. The rest of the place needs more light.
