Drew Barrymore did it. Raima Sen will be doing it (in her upcoming release). And now, it's Anushka Sharma. Her wild and colourful locks in Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola are grabbing as many eyeballs as the dekho magar pyaar se tattoo on her tailbone. City youngsters are hooked and are making this funky look their staple at parties.

Experimentalists are digging coloured extensions, dip-dye locks and ombre tresses that have already caught the fancy of celebs across Holly, Bolly and Tolly. And now, these are set to emerge as three of the many hair trends to look forward to in 2013. Here's deconstructing the key looks...

Ombre tresses

The trend might be fading out of Hollywood, but it's just catching up in India. For the uninitiated, in ombre, the hair is dark at the roots and gradually lightens all the way to the tips. The best part about the low-maintenance look is that the more the hair grows out, the better the style looks. Now which woman wouldn't love that! "I have done ombre for loads of people. In fact, I also did it on myself and my daughter. The look is basically like grown out hair colour. The best part is that if you are bored, you can just chop off the ends and you are back to your natural hair," says hair stylist Bridgette Jones.

Dip-dye locks

Don't feel like dying your entire mane? Just dip the ends and you're good to go! "People are trying colours on mid-lengths too," says beautician Prairna Khuller. "While the daring are going for blue and peach, red works best with slightly older people," she says. "We have had some people asking for it, but I guess Kolkata will take some time to open up to it," adds Julie Tseng, senior stylist at Eye Catchers. "Make sure the colour is a contrasting one. Traditional colours like burgundy and browns don't go well with this trend," reminds Raman Bhardwaj of AN John.

Hair extensions

Fancy Katy Perry's blue and pink strands? Hair extensions in blood red, electric blue, neon green, royal purple and shocking pink not only look funky but saves your mane from the harmful effects of ammonia. Says Bridgette,"My hottest selling items were hair extensions at the stall I set up during a college fest." Available in clip-on and glue versions, the latter lasting up to two months, each strand costs about 300. "I've seen youngsters donning these crazy extensions," says actor and stylist Neha Panda, who has given Raima Sen the boho-chic look in her next. "Opt for daring colours like blues and greens and steer clear of boring blondes," says Neha.
