Photographer Michael Von Graffenried's billboard art may have run into some trouble in Varanasi, but he firmly believes art's not meant to be holed up in galleries
"Taboo breaker" is what Swiss photographer and documentary filmmaker, Michael Von Graffenried calls himself. Choosing billboards in cities across the world to display his work rather than regular art galleries, the photographer, who shot into fame for his candid coverage of the Algerian Civil War from 1990 to 2000, says that his work depicts the struggles of the common man, so it should be on the streets rather than caged in art galleries.
The photographer, who recently mounted his photographs of Varanasi on billboards at the busy Rathyatra Crossing in the city, says that he was not able to put across his work among the people since the exhibition had to be closed down within two days. Apparently, there were authorisation issues with the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMV). "We had planned a month-long exhibition on 21 billboards here and had taken the consent of the authorities concerned. But immediately after the photographs, that depicted the different aspects of the city, were mounted, a group of people objected to a picture that had a religious connotations to it. Keeping in mind the people's sentiments, we replaced the photograph with a different one. Yet again objections were raised by the billboard lobby in the city and VMC, that earlier approved of 20 billboards. And they asked us to remove the photographs. Now, I have just one photograph on display on a billboard," says Michael.
But the photographer takes these things in his stride. "I always wanted to bring forth the reality through my work, which certainly requires going the extra mile. A few years ago, I had captured the romance of a couple, Peter and Astrid, both drug addicts in Switzerland, on my camera. I followed them for two years and even went to jail with them. I closely followed their lives, which I displayed on 30 billboards across cities like Bern, Zurich, Basel, Laussane, Geneva. Through their love story, the issue of drug addiction was also addressed," he shares.
It is not only the content of his exhibitions that set him apart but also his equipment. In this age of highend cameras, Michael still uses the panoramic camera that runs on a reel, which he develops, scans and converts into the digitalised format. "I bought this camera from a flea market and am using it since the last 20 years. It not only gives a wider view but also catches the subject of the photograph unaware, since there is no need to explicitly focus it. The need for this camera arose when I went to cover the Civil War in Algeria in 1990. With people refusing to come on camera, I had great difficulty to capture the real situation there. Moreover, the regime had completely banned the coverage of the War. I returned home and happened to come across this panoramic camera that helped me to candidly cover the Civil War. Later, I compiled my work in a book, which happened to land in the hands of Madame Boudiaf, the widow of the assassinated President of Algeria. She called me and asked me to make a documentary on the War which was called War Without Images and was shown in different film festivals including the Locarno Film Festival," says Michael who was on a second visit to Varanasi.
He adds, "I came 23 year ago to India. And for the exhilarating experiences I've had, I would like to return again, this time for the Kumbh Mela in January next year," he says.
