Aqua zorbing: The new craze in town

After paintball, water zorbing is the latest to catch the fancy of Vizagites.

Vizag, with its beaches, has always been a haven for water sports. Not so long ago, surfing was all the rage in the city, but it seems like a new, safer and easier sport has upstaged it. Yeah! We are talking about aqua zorbing, a water sport where an individual gets into an inflated ball and is discharged into a pool of water. The person inside the ball can jump, walk and even do cartwheels, without the fear of getting hurt.

Zorbing thrill
Benny Rodriguez, a sports enthusiast, who is all excited about this new water sport, says, "I regularly participate in adventure sports like rock climbing, trekking, valley crossing and others, but this is the first time I tried out something like water zorbing. It is a safe sport and the experience of walking on water while being enclosed in a big bubble is exhilarating. In fact, if you are zorbing for the first time, you literally have to learn to walk in the bubble."

For many of the city's thrill seekers, going doubles adds to their zorbing experience. Nasir Sheik an engineering student, says, "Every weekend I come here with my friends and since two bubbles are allowed in one pool, we have a whale of a time trying to topple each other. It is so much fun."

The growing craze
Explaining the reasons for the growing popularity of aqua zorbing, Melville Anthony Smythe, trainer at the Riders club Rushikonda, who has been training youngsters in surfing and yachting since 2002, says, "For surfing, one should know how to swim. Surfing is an act of riding a wave and the most common injuries that surfers suffer are on the legs, the head and face. It is a strenuous sport and added to that most women are afraid of getting tanned. In comparison, zorbing is definitely an easier and safer sport."

Viren shah, an enterpreneur states, "I've been surfing for the past two years, but when zorbing was introduced in the city, I was very happy; the reason being it's a sport that lets you walk on water even if you don't know how to swim."

Safety measures
While the sport is comparatively safer than most water sports, there are some precautions that aqua zorbers need to take. For starters, pregnant women are not allowed and the sport is barred for people suffering from high blood pressure, heart conditions, epilepsy, previous history of back, neck or head injuries or any physical or mental condition which may restrict for a safe ride. Talking about other precautions that need to be taken, Melville says, "For zorbing, more than two persons in the pool are not allowed. Somersaults should be avoided to prevent serious injuries. Apart from the risk of suffering from a sore throat, zorbing is considered to be a safe sport."
