Winter is definitely the season of experimenting with fashion and wardrobe choices.

While we pay extra attention in pulling out the warmest of clothes from our closet to combat the chilling winter winds, we often seem to settle for mediocre options when it comes to footwear. Why not be a showstopper with a dazzling pair of shoes as you step out and win admirers with every stride you take?

Designer Rahul Mishra in his Autumn/Winter collection 2011 showcased footwear in graphic style with crisp silhouettes and immaculate tailored look. He said, "The footwear trend focussed on the opulent and rather flamboyant metal sequence peep-toes in silver and classic blacks".

Winter also means playing with colours and moving beyond the bracket of blacks and grey and this is why the designer suggests how, "One can swim through the options of suede ankle boots, nude patent pumps and satin stilettos in different funky colours." Agrees Nida Mahmood, "A hint of red in footwear is in vogue." Pumps, for instance, made a comeback ever since Kalki Kochelin sported them in candy yellow colour in the film 'The Girl in Yellow Boots'.

Let us have a look at some of the footwear trends this season:

Wedge heels: The comfort factor is taken care of well with wedge heels in times when you have miles to walk and you are in no mood to cover the distance wearing that pointed pair of stilettos. With skirts and leggings, wedge heels give you a sense of assurance for they won't ditch you in the middle of your walking journey unlike precarious block heels with little reliability.

Fur-lined boots: Why not give our feet the same warmth as that of a quilt in winter? Fur-lined boots, also known as faux fur or shearling provide our feet with cushiony comfort while guaranteeing a cute fluffy look to the ensemble. Quilted boots teamed with a pair of well-fitted and dark-shade jeans and jacket signal a pretty dressing appearance. Eskimo boots too are being hailed as one of the favourites in footwear options among girls.

Ankle-high boots: If you are not a fan of knee-high shoes and find them unsuitable to your personality then you can surely make heads turn by slinking into a pair of ankle-length boots in shades of beige and brown. When paired with cropped pants, pencil skirts and capries, ankle-high boots ensure a hip and classy look to winter attire.

Laced-up boots: Lace-up details in shoes give an ornamental punch to the footwear. The added advantage is the way you can customize the fit of the shoes by tightening the strings. Chukka boots, simplified as turf boots once popular in the 1940-50s are making a comeback in footwear trends. These ankle-length boots with eyelets for lacing not only lend a fashionable look but also support your feet with a firm hold. Usually made from calfskin, chukka boots are also made from crocodile skin and as we all know the popularity quotient of animal prints, designer Nida Mahmood says, "Reptile skin makes a style statement and is a trendsetter".

Knee-high boots with buckles: Knee-high boots are almost synonymous with winter and if coupled well with sleek winter coats, sweaters and warmers, knee-length boots add a defining charm to your personality. Smart buckles and straps as additions on your pair of leather boots make for a complete winter dressing.

Furry clogs: Yes, clogs are no longer restricted to the summer season; they have made themselves quite worthy of being worn in freezing weather as well. When bulky winter boots seem to be much of a troublemaker, clogs can be your preferred choice. Wooden and knotted clog booties can add that extra zing to your overall attire.

Whether you have an important meeting in office, a casual get-together with friends or a high-profile party in the evening to attend, you can pick your favourite from any of the above choices, and be good to go!
