Restaurant review: Kailash Parbat

Restaurant review: Kailash Parbat

The popular Mumbai-based fifty-year old brand, makes inroads into the Hyderabad market, with a standalone restaurant, its second presence, if you count their counter inside Inorbit Mall's food court.

Decor
Fairly large-sized, (130 covers, with a PDR of 20 pax), the restaurant has a minimalist decor, without clutter. We liked the subtle lighting and the paisley motif laser-cut into the glass wall on one side.

Food
Although the menu has Continental (sandwiches, pizzas, pastas), Oriental (noodles etc), and North Indian, their USP is the chaats, sev puris, paani puris, pav-bhaji, chole-bhature etc. Also, of novelty factor, is the presence of Sindhi dishes, like sai bhaji, Sindhi curry, koki, etc.

The lunch buffet, at `299 (plus taxes) is great value for money. On the day we dined there, we were served paani puri, sev batata puri and dahi bhalla from the chaat counter. There are fresh green (hot) and red (sweet) chutneys, and the paani was also pretty good. The sev puri, particularly, was memorable in an addictive way.

For starters, we had Aloo Tuk, Paneer Salt & Pepper and Afghani sheekh kabab, served with lemon iced tea. The first was delish, crisp and hot potato roundels, topped with a spicy (just right) chatpata seasoning, we were informed that it was a Sindhi 'nashto'. But it was the Paneer Salt and Pepper, which was outstanding, with the paneer crisp outside and melting inside, sauteed with plenty of peppers (red, yellow and green), and onions, and the simple salt and pepper seasoning, adding to its flavour. There was also Talumein soup, just okay. The main course options were aplenty; besides salads like Pasta in Pesto Sauce, there is Paneer Methi, Dal Pancharatna, Veg Peshawri, with accompaniments like steamed basil rice (hot and delicious), Awadhi Kewra Biryani (innovative), and an assortment of Indian breads.

Also on the table was Hakka Noodles, and Buddha Delight, a steamed gravy style medley of tofu and vegetables like pak choy, lettuce, broccoli, corn etc. There was also Fettucine Pasta in Spinach and Cheese sauce, made pretty competently.

Plus & Minus
Each of the dishes on the buffet passed muster in a fresh and flavourful way, but we found the choice of desserts (gulab jamun, two pastries and assorted fruit) a tad disappointing.
Its early days, so one is hoping, for the foodie in all of us, that the good run continues.
