Small cars have never been Detroit's strong suit, and up until last year's Chevrolet Sonic (itself a Best New Cars winner), General Motors seemed, well... inept. So when I heard they were taking a crack at their own mini-car, I figured we'd have another Vega or Chevette on our hands. Turns out I was completely wrong: The Chevrolet Spark gets all the broad strokes right, with its cute styling, bright colors, city-friendly size, roomy front seats, and a tiny little sewing-machine motor that delivers excellent gas mileage (despite the handicap of its old-tech transmissions). Value is purely American: $12,995 gets you air conditioning, power windows, and alloy wheels. This is not just a passable effort; it's truly a great little car.
