Restaurant Review: BISO at the Citrus Hotel

Restaurant Review: BISO at the Citrus Hotel
It's strange that an area like Pimpri Chinchwad and nearby Chakan, with such a long history of industry and corporate offices does not have much in the way of food.
Decor
So I decided to trek the one hour across town in search of lunch. And believe me it was not an easy task. I wonder what all those executives in Alfa Laval, Forbes Marshall, Sandvik etc do for lunch? Surely they must be getting fed up of their own canteens and dining rooms. I had heard about Citrus opening late last year and was eager to see what it was all about. It is a modest 4 star hotel; I did not get a chance to see the rooms but it seemed unpretentious as the look and feel goes. And not surprisingly it is doing very well. They have a modest bar, oriental and a large all day dining full of light and space called Biso.
Food
The lunch here is a buffet and priced very reasonably as well as a comprehensive international menu. My expectations were mixed and so we decided to go for the Maharashtrian specialities on the menu. The bhareli vangi stuffed with a chutney endowed with peanuts, coconut and tamarind and a little jaggery was quite authentic in flavour: the batate cha rassa, completely home style and the matkichi ussal was more regional and quite heavy on the masala. They also make the lighter ussal which is used for the Maharashtrian snack missal, topped with chivda and sev. The masala fish fried in a light rava coating was spot-on but my favourite had to be the kombdichi kadi — the home style chicken curry, spicy, oily but unputdownable. I have never quite figured out what goes into this masala and it is something which is quite difficult to replicate unless you make it regularly. They also have a mutton cha rassa and a Maharashtra style kheema pav which I would love to try next time.
Plus & minus: This is a Hotel and so it is full of young executives with a purpose, which makes it quite different from Hotels in the city.
